CatWalk XT 10.0, 10.5, or 10.6 does not open

The CatWalk XT 10 software may fail to open or fail to start up if the camera has not connected properly, if you do not have access to necessary files, or if there is a problem with the settings files. CatWalk creates a log file which can be used by Noldus support to identify the specific issue.

Camera not connected properly

This issue will only occur if the walkway is connected to the computer and powered on. If this is the issue, after shutting off power to the walkway, the software will open correctly.

Normally this can be solved by shutting off the walkway, wait 10 seconds, turn the walkway on, and wait one to two minutes before opening the CatWalk software. This resets the camera and resolves most issues.

Insufficient access

CatWalk may not open if you are logged into the computer with a Guest account or other account with restricted access.

It will also not open if the first person to use CatWalk on this computer after its installation had administrative access, but you do not. If this occurs, the easiest resolution is to delete the settings files (see below) and then open CatWalk using a regular (non-administrative) account. The problem will not occur in that case. Opening CatWalk with an administrative account will not cause any problems as long as it was first opened with a regular account.

Invalid settings files

CatWalk may not open if one of the settings files is corrupted or damaged. The settings files are located in this folder:

  • C:\ProgramData\Noldus\CatWalk\XT 10.6\Settings\

Note that ProgramData is a hidden folder. If you don’t see it, in Windows 7 or 8 press the Alt key to get the menu, then go to Tools, Folder Options, click the View tab, and then under Hidden Files And Folders select “Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives”, then click OK. In Windows 10, click View on the ribbon and check the box to view hidden files.

You can selectively remove settings files and try opening CatWalk. Any missing files will be recreated. Removing all of the settings files will resolve this for certain. However any relevant settings will be lost (e.g., if you remove “detectionsettingsprofiles.dat”, you will need to redo the detection settings). So it may be worth your time to remove them selectively to determine which file(s) are the issue.

Check the log file

There may be a log file which will help us diagnose the problem. If so, it will be in

  • C:\ProgramData\Noldus\CatWalk\XT 10.6\Log\

Note that ProgramData is a hidden folder. If you don’t see it, in Windows 7 or 8 press the Alt key to get the menu, then go to Tools, Folder Options, click the View tab, and then under Hidden Files And Folders select “Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives”, then click OK. In Windows 10, click View on the ribbon and check the box to view hidden files.

Send this log file to Noldus support and we can diagnose the problem for you.
