Software-Based Licensing

Traditionally, Noldus has used hardware-based licenses for all of its software, requiring a hardware license key (or “dongle”) to be plugged in while using the software. Starting with The Observer XT 16, EthoVision XT 17, and FaceReader 9, we now offer a software-based license as an alternative. A software-based license does not require a dongle.

Fixed vs. Floating Licenses

There are two ways a software-based license can be used. You can choose between them during activation:

  • Fixed License: Activated on a single computer. After activation, the software can be used without a license key or internet connection. Use is limited to that one computer unless the license is deactivated and reactivated elsewhere. Internet is required only for activation/deactivation. (EthoVision XT 17 also supports offline activation via QR code and smartphone.)
  • Floating License: Allows activation on multiple computers, but only one can use the software at a time (unless multiple seats are purchased). An internet connection is required during use. Once a user closes the software, it becomes available to others.

You can switch between fixed and floating types at any time by deactivating and then reactivating the license with the desired mode.

Multiple Seats

Some licenses allow multiple concurrent users—these are referred to as seats. The seat count is set at the time of purchase (default is one). For example:

  • If your license has 3 seats, and you activate one computer with a fixed license, then 2 seats remain available for floating use.
  • Floating licenses consume a seat only when the software is open; fixed licenses always occupy a seat.

Notes for EthoVision XT

For EthoVision XT specifically:

  • A license is only needed to acquire tracks (from camera or video) or to create new experiments that use optional modules like trial control or multiple arenas.
  • Data analysis only (e.g., post-acquisition review of trials) does not require a license.

For The Observer and FaceReader, a license is required at all times to use the software.
