Capturing Images from the Screen in Windows

Windows provides several ways to capture images from your screen, including keyboard shortcuts and built-in tools. Additionally, Noldus software includes features for saving settings and graph images directly.

Print Screen Key (All Windows Versions)

You can capture your screen using the Print Screen key (usually labeled PrtScr):

  • Full screen: Press PrtScr to copy the entire screen to the clipboard.
  • Active window only: Press Alt + PrtScr to copy just the active window.

Once copied to the clipboard, paste the image into another application such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Paint (Ctrl + V). In Paint, you can save the image as a file.

Snipping Tool (Windows 7, 8, 10)

The Snipping Tool allows you to capture specific screen regions:

  1. Open the Start Menu and search for “Snipping Tool.”
  2. Click New and use the cursor to select the area to capture.
  3. Annotate or save the image using the built-in options.

In Windows 10, you may also see Snip & Sketch, which is replacing the original Snipping Tool.

Snip & Sketch (Windows 10 and newer)

Snip & Sketch provides quick screen captures with annotation support:

  • Use shortcut Windows + Shift + S to immediately start a snip.
  • Select an area of the screen using your mouse.
  • A notification will appear — click it to open the snip in Snip & Sketch.
  • You can annotate or save the image from there.

Alternatively, launch Snip & Sketch from the Start Menu by typing "snip".

Capturing Images in Noldus Software

Noldus applications often include built-in screenshot tools:

  • Graphs: Right-click on a graph to copy or save it.
  • EthoVision XT: Use the camera icon in Arena Settings, Trial Control Settings, or Data Profiles to save a screenshot of your configuration.
  • The Observer XT: Similar functionality is available in Data Profile and Visualization views.

Refer to the documentation of your specific Noldus software for additional image capture options.
