License Requirements for Noldus Software
Most Noldus software requires a valid license to operate:
- Fully Required: e.g., The Observer XT
- Required for Full Functionality: e.g., acquisition in EthoVision
Licenses come in two forms:
- Hardware license key (dongle): A USB device that stores license data (not files).
- Software activation code: Introduced in newer versions, it replaces the need for a dongle.
Software Versions Using Software-Based Licenses
The following software versions support software-based activation codes (no dongle required):
- The Observer XT 16
- EthoVision XT 17
- Media Recorder 6
- FaceReader 9
If you are using an earlier version or were issued a hardware license key, the dongle must be connected to use the software.
Multiple Noldus Licenses
If you own multiple Noldus software licenses (e.g., FaceReader, Media Recorder, The Observer), ensure the correct dongle is inserted for the software you wish to use. Each license key is software-specific and not interchangeable.
Tip: You can connect multiple keys simultaneously to the same PC without conflict.
Troubleshooting a Missing Hardware License Key
Problem: "No hardware key detected"
This usually indicates that the dongle driver did not install correctly. Common signs include:
- The red LED light on the dongle blinks briefly, then turns off.
- The software displays a license error message.
Cause
- Driver installation failed.
- Driver is outdated (common on Windows 10/11).
Solution
Install or update the license key driver using the following file:
Download HASP Driver 8.13
- Download and extract the file if zipped.
- Right-click the installer and choose "Run as administrator".
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Still Not Working?
If the dongle is still not recognized after installing the driver, contact Noldus Technical Support for further assistance.
