Fixing Video Playback Issues in EthoVision XT (.mp4 files or Media File Error Id 8356)
If video files—especially .mp4
files—that previously worked are no longer functioning properly in EthoVision XT, the likely cause is a problem with video codecs. This often occurs after installing, uninstalling, or updating other video software.
Error Message: Media File Error (Id 8356)
Solution: Use the MediaTypeRegistryCleaner Tool
This utility is designed to fix registry issues related to video codecs.
Option 1: If You Have the EthoVision XT 16 or 17 Installation USB
- Navigate to the folder:
\Drivers and tools\Utilities\MediaTypeRegistryCleaner
- Proceed with the steps below under How to Use the Tool.
Option 2: Download the Tool

Once downloaded:
- Right-click the ZIP file and choose Extract All.
- Open the extracted folder and navigate to x64.
- Right-click on MediaTypeRegistryCleaner.exe inside the
x64
folder.
- Select Run as administrator.
- (You may need IT support if you do not have admin privileges on the PC.)
- Once the process completes, reboot your computer.
Check the Result
After rebooting, try opening your video file in EthoVision XT again. If the issue persists, confirm that the video is playable in another application (e.g., Windows Media Player) and contact Noldus Support if further help is needed.
