Reinstalling the Picolo Diligent drivers for EthoVision XT

The Picolo Diligent was used as the framegrabber card for EthoVision XT versions 4-8 and the card continued to be supported in EthoVision XT 9 and 10. The card is only usable in Windows XP 32-bit and Windows 7 32-bit. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows installed, or Windows 10, this is the wrong card. You might have the Picolo U4, U8, or Alert in that case. This card has four round metal BNC connectors on the back of the computer with a small red block of tiny switches, the same as shown in the picture for the Picolo Alert.

Starting in EthoVision XT 8, we shipped the Picolo U4 or U8 instead of the Diligent, which had been discontinued. You can distinguish between the two cards by looking at the back of the computer. The Diligent has four round metal BNC ports directly on the computer. The Picolo U4 has one wide connector, with a breakout cable that splits into 6 short (1’) black cables each with a round metal numbered BNC connector on the end. (If your breakout cable splits into 10, that’s the Picolo U8.) The Picolo U4 and U8 use a different driver.

Newer systems with EthoVision XT 14 and up may have the Picolo Alert. This card looks the same as the Picolo Diligent (but will not work in older versions of EthoVision).

When is reinstallation required?

If your card is the Picolo Diligent but it is not recognized by EthoVision, please follow the directions below to uninstall and reinstall the card. Installing the wrong driver will prevent the card from working, so please double-check that you have the Diligent.

Note that this card may also cease operating if the computer has gone into Sleep or Standby mode. This can be resolved by simply shutting down the computer and then restarting it. The computer should be set so that it never goes into Sleep or Standby, and disable Fast Startup, to avoid this issue.

If the card is recognized by EthoVision, but the image is all black or all white, the problem is more likely with the camera, cables, or connections. Check that the camera has power and is connected to the computer.

Uninstall the Picolo Diligent

You’ll need to uninstall the card first if drivers were ever previously installed and are not currently working.

Uninstall the driver from the Device Manager.

  • Make sure EthoVision is closed.
  • Go to the Start menu, Control Panel, System, click the Hardware tab, and then pick Device Manager
  • Locate Euresys and click the triangle next to it to expand the options. You should find the Picolo Diligent listed here. Right-click on Picolo Diligent and select Uninstall.
  • If this item is missing from the Device Manager, you can proceed with the next step.

Uninstall the driver from the programs list.

  • Go to the Start menu, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs.
  • Locate MultiCam x.x.x.x (where x.x.x.x is the version number of the drivers installed) and click the Remove button to uninstall.
  • If other Euresys or Picolo drivers are installed, remove them too. They will conflict.

Install the Picolo Diligent

  • If you uninstalled the Diligent drivers as directed above, reboot the computer. If you’ve just installed the card for the first time, the computer should be just starting up. In either case, IGNORE the prompt to install new hardware (click Cancel).
  • You'll need the file multicam-6.7.1.1574.exe. If you have the installation CD for EthoVision, it can be found in the folder \Drivers\MultiCam Driver. Otherwise, it can be downloaded here: Picolo Diligent driver
  • Double-click the downloaded file to install the driver.
  • Reboot the PC again.
  • Open EthoVision and try it out. EthoVision should detect the card and, assuming you have a camera connected, should be able to get an image from it. If it offers the card as an option for live tracking but you get no image, the drivers and card are ok but there is an issue with the camera or the camera's connection with the card. In that case check the connections.
